How it started

​

Taneikah launched Upgrade Dance Competition and dance camp in 2019, with four qualifying events in Brisbane, Sydney, Auckland (NZ) & Singapore leading to a huge finals event on the Sunshine Coast, including a battle event and Upgrade Dance Camp with an epic line up of international judges and choreographers.  This is an annual event set to experience rapid growth and providing community, social and economic benefits.

Upgrade was born through collaboration between Taneikah and the founders of Get the Beat Dance competition, a competition that disrupted conventional dance eisteddfods with a fresh methodology in the environment generated, an innovative format and high-level professional organisation and execution with progressive expansion across Australia, New Zealand and Asia.

As a forward-thinking company the founders of GTB recognised that established dance eisteddfods grounded in the syllabus-based commercial dance disciplines that offered ‘hip hop’ sections did not reflect the genuine industry sector of choreographic dance influenced by hip hop, freestyle, street and club styles or the required format, integrations and representations.  In collaboration with Taneikah, they designed a concept that would integrate with GBT’s market and resources yet be a stand-alone event in itself produced by Taneikah.  This would also address gaps T identified in existing hip hop competitions and the need for a new level of innovation and professionalism.

 

How it evolved
 

IN 2021, Upgrade ran stand alone for the first time on the Sunshine Coast, with a highly successful and innovative online component to accomodate to covid restrictions at the time.  Upgrade returns in 2024 bigger and better with qualifier events in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and Auckland with a huge 3 day finals event hosted in Sydney including 2 round competition, knockout and championship as well as a battle event and dance camp headlining international artists.
